Summary: In 2017, the Forest Preserves entered into an agreement with Chicago River Canoe & Kayak (CRCK) to manage the Maple Lake Boathouse. This agreement included a provision for CRCK to cover a certain percentage of utility costs. However, a review by the Forest Preserves’ Finance, Facilities and Permits Departments revealed that CRCK was also paying for utilities in areas not directly managed by them, such as restrooms and parking lot lighting.
Due to this oversight, this contract amendment would require CRCK to reimburse the Forest Preserves for 70% of the utility costs incurred during the boathouse season, instead of the originally agreed upon 100%. Accordingly, and to support the sustainability of this concession, the Forest Preserves also seeks authorization to waive 30% of the utility fees for the 2024 season under this amendment. Using 2023 utilities data, the Forest Preserves estimates that CRCK will reduce their utility payment to the Forest Preserves by approximately $758 annually. With this accommodation, CRCK continues to pay the Forest Preserves per its contracted terms under this agreement and other boat concession agreements with the Forest Preserves.
