Summary: ComEd is seeking to support the use of very high efficiency Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems through its Emerging Technologies grant program. The $300,000.00 proposed grant to the Forest Preserves will support the Forest Preserves’ replacement of existing gas-fired boilers and inefficient mechanical systems at the Forest Preserves’ General Headquarters with all-electric heating, ventilating, and cooling system (see related Board Item No. 23-0018). The Forest Preserves will also be addressing building envelope deficiencies to reduce the amount of energy needed. The new system will advance the Forest Preserves’ Sustainability and Climate Resiliency Plan by reducing the Forest Preserves impact on the effects of global climate change. ComEd will provide half the grant funds upon execution of the agreement and disburse the second half upon completion of construction. The Forest Preserves will provide ComEd with energy performance data produced by the new system. The new system is designed to the requirements of ComEd’s subcontractor, the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT), and will be monitored by IMT per the Memorandum of Understanding approved by the Board November 2, 2021 (Board Item No. 21-0479). Separate purchases of equipment for the installation were approved by the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners on March 14, 2023 (Board Item Nos. 23-0212 and 23-0213).
