Summary: In 2022, the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the acceptance of grant funding from IDNR’s Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant program to reconstruct and improve existing boat launch ramps and on-shore fishing boardwalk, add a fully-accessible canoe/kayak dock, new program shelter and interpretive signs, new restroom building and new trail connection to the adjacent Altgeld Gardens neighborhood. The Board previously approved a one (1) year, no-cost time extension in 2024 (Board Item No. 24-0104).
A second one-year, no-cost time extension is needed to allow additional time for the acquisition of a small land area owned by the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) that is needed to connect water service for a new restroom building and new trail connection. The CHA board is expected to approve the conveyance at their May 27, 2025 board meeting and submit to the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) for final approval; however, HUD approval could take up to six (6) months. Other aspects of the grant-funded project are substantially complete.
