Summary:  The Forest Preserves has partnered with Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation since 2008 to conduct wildlife field research involving capture/release, data collection, sampling, monitoring, and analysis of wildlife activity. This work supplements the Forest Preserves’ understanding of wildlife interactions within the urban environment and assists the Forest Preserves with tracking zoonotic disease transmission between wildlife and human populations. Information gathered through this work is shared throughout the health services community both locally and nationally, including but not limited to the Cook County Department of Public Health, Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation is considered a sole source vendor due to their unique expertise in wildlife research, local officing, access to regionally and nationally prominent biologists, as well as the length of their longstanding partnership with the Forest Preserves on various research projects, including the globally renowned Urban Coyote Project.

This contract was originally approved by the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners on 3/11/2014 (Board Item No. 14-0121), and subsequently amended on 9/12/2017 (Board Item No. 17-0228) to extend the program for an additional five-year term ending in 2022. The Forest Preserves now seeks to add up to $800,000.00 in authority, bringing the total program costs to approximately $2,240,000.00 since 2014.
