Summary: This grant award by CMAP through the locally programmed Transportation Alternative Program (TAP-L) is for reconstruction of a portion of the Des Plaines Trail between Bryn Mawr Avenue and Irving Park Road (also known as Segments 3 and 4) to address chronic flooding and related safety hazards. This portion of the trail is unusable for a significant portion of the year. The reconstruction project includes realignment of portions of the trail outside of the floodplain, replacement of an existing underpass with a new pedestrian bridge over Lawrence Avenue, construction of some boardwalk and other improvements.
This project is part of a larger Des Plaines Trail improvement partnership effort that includes local municipalities, transportation agencies and bicycle advocacy groups. The Village of Rosemont and City of Park Ridge were awarded separate transportation grants to improve other portions of the trail immediately to the north of the Forest Preserves’ reconstruction project. A total of 5.4 miles of the larger Des Plaines Trail extending from Touhy Avenue to Irving Park Road are scheduled for reconstruction by the end of 2025.
