Seniors Enjoying Nature Inside/Outside Rain or Shine! Join us for a nature-inspired adventure for seniors. Ages 55 and up. Registration and facemasks required.

Winter Woodworking, Rolling Knolls, Elgin

Repurpose the common European buckthorn into something new! Equipment provided. Intended for ages 10 and up. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration and facemasks required. Call 224-456-8602.

Family Winter Scavenger Hunt and Campfire, Trailside Museum, River Forest    

Enjoy a winter afternoon on a self-guided hunt for signs of animals and plant life on your Scavenger Hunt List, followed by snacks and relaxing around a campfire. Registration and facemasks required. Call 708-366-6530.

Illuminated Night Hike, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington

Crabtree is staying up late for this special hike in the dark. Giant's Hollow will be lit by candles and the (nearly) full moon for a hike few have a chance to see. Registration and facemasks required.

 

Monday, 1/17; 10am - 2pm

MLK Day of Service: Give Back to the Land, Sand Ridge Nature Center, South Holland

Giving back drives happiness, boosts self-esteem and builds community with others. Join us as we restore native habitat by removing invasive species and doing a litter clean up. No experience necessary. Facemasks required.

 

Additionally you can join us for self-led volunteer litter cleanup and make a direct impact on the health and beauty of your local forest preserves at the other five Nature Centers and Dan Ryan Woods, Miller Meadow, Caldwell Woods and Sault Trail Woods-North. Check out the website for details.

Sand Ridge by Candlelight, Sand Ridge Nature Center, South Holland

Enjoy Sand Ridge at night during a relaxing candlelit self-guided walk through the woods. Multiple time slots available. Registration and facemasks required.

Winter Exploration Day, Caldwell Woods Warming Shelter, Chicago

Find your way using a compass, follow local animal tracks and more. Warm up by the indoor fire and make a s’more. Snowshoeing and sledding available, weather permitting. Facemasks required.  

 

Saturday, 1/22; 1:30pm

Ice Sun Catcher Craft and Walk, Trailside Museum, River Forest    

Join us as we get outdoors and make a fun and easy craft. A short winter hike will follow while our sun catcher’s freeze. Children 5 and up with adult. Registration and facemasks required. Call 708-366-6530.

Insects in Winter, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook

Hunt our trails for the mighty snow flea and learn about winter insects. Facemasks required.

Evening Snowshoe Hike, Camp Reinberg, Palatine

Explore the Forest Preserves after dark on snowshoes. Snowshoes will be provided upon request. Four inches of hard snow is required to snowshoe. If no snow, we will take an evening stroll on foot. Registration and facemasks required. Register at experience.camping@cookcountyil.gov.
