Summary:  The Forest Preserves of Cook County (the “Forest Preserves”) is working with several municipalities to improve ten (10) miles of the Des Plaines River Trail from North Avenue to Touhy Avenue. Schiller Park is one of three municipalities that submitted grant applications to support engineering design of improvements to the northern four (4) miles. Schiller Park submitted a grant application to the Illinois Department of Transportation (“IDOT”) for an Illinois Transportation Enhancement (“ITEP”) grant for Phase II engineering for the trail segment closest to Schiller Park (north of Irving Park Road to Lawrence Avenue) which was recently approved. Schiller Park advised the Forest Preserves that Schiller Park needs support to pay the local match required by the grant.

As the local sponsor, Schiller Park will be responsible for contracting for Phase II engineering work at an estimated cost of $321,800.00. IDOT will reimburse Schiller Park for 90% up to a maximum of $289,575.00 (including 50% of the required local match). The Forest Preserves is seeking authority to reimburse Schiller Park for the balance of the required 10% local match, not to exceed $32,225.00.

Phase II design work is expected to be completed by fall of 2022. Final agreement is subject to legal review and approval.
