Summary: The Forest Preserves has been sub-awarded funds from the Morton Arboretum via the U.S. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program in order to conduct a tree inventory of 50% of its picnic groves between 2021-2022.

Gathered information will include the location, species, size, and other information with respect to each individual tree and will enable the Forest Preserves to develop a management plan. The inventory will be used to monitor tree health over time, prepare for potential new invasive species, improve tree diversity, maintain the tree canopy, create a digital record of tree locations within each picnic grove, mitigate potential climate change impacts including extreme weather occurrences, and plan for future tree plantings across the entire picnic grove system.
