PROPOSED PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT

Request:  Requesting authorization for the Forest Preserves of Cook County (the “Forest Preserves”) to enter into a Partnership Agreement with the American Indian Center, 3401 W Ainslie St, Chicago, Illinois 60625.

Reason:  The Forest Preserve Foundation awarded a grant to the Forest Preserves of Cook County for the Forest Preserves to develop community engagement strategies with the American Indian Center (AIC), including development of a plan for ongoing programming with AIC that is delivered in partnership. AIC and the Forest Preserves were at the time of the award working together to complete the Serpent Mound project at Schiller Woods and the grant sought to strengthen that partnership. The partnership was put on pause due to COVID-19 but as we move forward through the next year, will focus on investing in developing long term programming around the Serpent Mounds, the Canoe Launch at Irving Park Road and the Des Plaines River and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Additionally, the AIC will provide input into conversations and ideas with the Forest Preserves to consider strategies for Native American community consultation related to interpretation, stewardship and cultural events. AIC has already been an incredibly valuable partner in helping the Forest Preserves with the Land Acknowledgement, interpretative signage and special events. The funds from the grant will support AIC’s efforts that could include staff time, program supplies, youth stipends and transportation related to these various initiatives.
