Summary:  The Forest Preserves’ wildlife section utilizes telemetry equipment to collect spatial-temporal data for the purpose of tracking a variety of mammals, herptiles, fish, and avian species affixed with encoded transmitters for wildlife research programs. Satellite-based transmitters with global positioning system (GPS) capabilities require additional location and pinging fees, which provide location information at a specified frequency that can be adjusted to meet research objectives. Current rates as of June 2020 are $30.00 per month for data accession, plus $0.04 per acquired fix.

Advanced Telemetry Systems has been a longstanding supplier of wildlife telemetry equipment for the Forest Preserves, ensuring consistency of data collection. Transmitters must be replenished on a consistent basis as older units reach the end of their functional lifespan in order to avoid data gaps for programs which, in many cases, have been ongoing for decades and inform collaborative research programs with universities and government health agencies. This is a sole source procurement.
