Title: PROPOSED MISCELLANEOUS ITEM OF BUSINESS Department: Office of the General Superintendent Summary: The Adler Planetarium ("Adler") is dedicated to connecting students and volunteers and the public to hands-on science, engineering and community engagement. As part of its mission, over the last two years Adler has worked with dozens of teen program participants in advancing our understanding of the impact of light pollution in our communities. Students have helped to design, build and use GONets - instruments used to monitor light pollution in the field. Working with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, Adler teams are pursuing the idea of applying for an International Dark-Sky Association Urban Dark Sky Place designation for the area surrounding Little Red Schoolhouse. Adler staff are excited about the opportunity to engage students in making a change through science with the potential to help expand the offerings of the Forest Preserves to their community.
