Summary: This IGA was originally approved by the Board of Commissioners on 7/16/2013 for the removal of seven (7) dams on the Des Plaines River and North Branch of the Chicago River. Amendment #1 of this IGA was approved by the Board of Commissioners on 12/16/2014. IDNR provided an initial advance of $500,000.00 in May 2015, which allowed removal of two (2) of the seven (7) dams. IDNR removed another two (2) of the seven (7) dams with their construction crew at no cost to the Forest Preserves. IDNR suspended this IGA effective 6/30/2015. On 3/9/2017 Amendment #2 of this IGA was retroactively approved by the Board of Commissioners to allow the project to continue in the event funding was restored. IDNR’s funding has recently been restored and IDNR recommends an extension of this IGA until 6/30/2024 to allow time for the removal of the remaining dams. Final amendment is subject to legal review and approval.
