Summary: The Forest Preserves of Cook County (the "Forest Preserves") recently completed a feasibility study to extend the existing paved trails at 26th St. and 1st Ave. to Ogden Ave./Cermak-Ottawa Woods. The feasibility study identified multiple alternatives that included both on-street and off-street options for further Phase I engineering study and design. It also included improved access to the Brookfield Zoo along 31st St. for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized trail users. The Forest Preserves requests authority to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the Villages for a Phase I Engineering Study for routes that will enable future trail users to safely travel from the Salt Creek trail system to the Chicago Portage National Historic Site. 80% of project costs will be covered by state grant funds, the Forest Preserves will make a one-time contribution of $16,000.00, and the Villages will cover the remaining costs and expenses for the project. The Village of Brookfield will be the lead agency.
