PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING COMMISSIONER JESÚS G. “CHUY” GARCÍA

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Jesús G. "Chuy" García has served as a Commissioner on the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board of Commissioners since 2010 and after eight years of public service in that role to the residents and visitors of Cook County and its forest preserves, he will continue public service in the United States House of Representatives; and

 

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County “to acquire, restore and manage lands for the purpose of protecting and preserving public open space with its natural wonders, significant prairies, forests, wetlands, rivers, streams, and other landscapes with all of its associated wildlife, in a natural state for the education, pleasure and recreation of the public now and in the future;” and

 

WHEREAS, the Forest Preserves District of Cook County has an over one-hundred-year history, currently spans almost seventy thousand acres, shares over sixty million visits annually, and contributes immeasurably to the quality of life of residents of Cook County and scientific research and conservation, including public-private partnerships with the Brookfield Zoo and Chicago Botanic Garden; and   

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner García earned his bachelors’ degree in Political Science while helping people at the Legal Assistance Foundation, then continuing to serve people at the Little Village Neighborhood Housing Service, and later earned a masters’ degree in Urban Planning from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner García was previously a member of the Chicago City Council from the 22nd ward for six years, Illinois State Senator for six years, founding executive director of the Little Village Community Development Corporation, now known as Enlace Chicago, founding chair of the board for the Latino Policy Forum, and a member of the boards for Woods Fund Chicago and the Center on Leadership Innovation; and

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner García served as a member of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board of Commissioners in the following committees: Contract Compliance, Finance, Finance Subcommittee on Labor, Legislation and Intergovernmental Relations, Real Estate, and Zoological; and

 

WHEREAS, he and his staff were active participants in the planning and execution of the Chicago Zoological Society’s popular Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration every September; and  

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby extend our sincere and grateful appreciation to United States Representative Elect Jesús G. "Chuy" García for his exemplary and continuing career in public service and on the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners, and our best wishes to him for continued success, happiness, and good health in the years to come; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of same be tendered to United States Representative Elect Jesús G. "Chuy" García.end
