Celebrate Spring! Caldwell Woods, Warming Shelter, 6350 W Devon, Ave, Chicago
Spring has sprung! Come celebrate the passing of the vernal equinox and the beginning of Easter with us, as we hike through the woods and make crafts that will highlight the return of warm weather, longer days, migrating birds, and other wildlife to our preserves. We will be taking spring-themed hikes, learning about all-natural egg dyeing techniques, as well as making spring-related crafts, birdhouses, bird feeders and more.

Salamanders in the Spotlight, Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, Willow Springs
Search for salamanders along a night-hike to observe these amazing amphibians migrating to ephemeral wetlands. Registration Required. Family Program. Limit 25.

Biking in the Forest Preserves, Trailside Museum of Natural History, River Forest
Get maps and learn about new trails and the biking adventures that await you. In addition, Barnard’s Schwinn of Oak Park will be on hand to help you get your bike ready to hit the trail.

A Stroll through Calumet, Sand Ridge Nature Center, South Holland
Go back in time to when this region was under glaciers; when Sand Ridge was a shoreline; and when settlers arrived. Program includes pioneer cabin tour.

Some birds are specific to habitat type. Join us as we highlight different habitats by visiting a new preserve each week. Adults and interested teens. Registration required. Part of the #birdthepreserves 2016 program.

Canyon Tours, Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, Lemont
Sagawau Canyon will highlight the geology of Northeastern Illinois. Hike is over rough terrain, and wading through a stream is necessary. Registration in person or by phone, starts the Monday prior to the program date. No groups. Space is limited

View planets and deep-sky wonders through a telescope, clear skies permitting. In the event of poor skies, an astronomy lecture and slide show will be presented. Register by 4/5.

Come to the center to learn about our Prescribed Burn program, and witness an evening controlled burn first hand. Registration required.

Ralph Frese Memorial Paddle, Willow Road Dam, Willow Rd & N Forest Way Dr., Winnetka
Experienced paddlers, bring your canoe or kayak and celebrate the legacy of canoe legend Ralph Frese by paddling down the Chicago River from Willow Road Dam to Linne Woods in Morton Grove. A shuttle bus will be provided and will run from 8 am to 2 pm from Linne Woods (Dempster St and Ferris Ave) to Willow Road Dam.

Here’s your chance to learn the basics of lawn care. Using the Garden’s holistic turf management program as a model, you will learn how to cultivate a thriving lawn while lessening pesticide use. Topics covered include cover turf culture, mowing, aerating, watering, fertilizing and weeding, and insect and disease control.

Every day is Earth Day at Brookfield Zoo, but on this very special day we will be showcasing some of the steps you can commit to that will truly make a difference for animals across the globe! Visit the Eco Expo, drop off recycling, enjoy live entertainment, plant a tree, and enjoy green activities and crafts. We will have special Zoo Chats on giraffe’s (the featured animal for this year’s Party for the Planet at Zoo Run Run). Party for the planet will be filled with educational, engaging, and fun activities for the entire famiy.
