Summary: This grant will enable the Forest Preserves to conduct an assessment of Calumet wetland habitats and create a plan that identifies opportunities for restoration and how to best conserve and improve habitat for wetland-dependent birds and other species. The total cost of the project, which addresses a top priority for South Chicago, the Calumet and the Millennium Reserve to improve wetlands, is estimated to be $317,161.00. The Forest Preserves is responsible for 51.5%, or $163,337.00, of the total. This project is a collaborative effort and will involve the Chicago Park District, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Wetland Initiative, the Field Museum, and Audubon Chicago Region. Contributions from each of these partners are anticipated and could ultimately reduce the amount of funds expended by the Forest Preserves to $15,000.00.
