Summary: The Forest Preserves has partnered with USDA for over a decade to collaborate on extensive wildlife services programs focused on population management, sampling, and surveillance of zoonotic and other wildlife borne diseases across a variety of mammalian, avian, reptilian and amphibian species. This work allows Forest Preserves wildlife biologists to track changes in disease transmittal in wildlife communities and assess how those diseases may affect human populations. Additionally, these projects assist the Forest Preserves with implementing and meeting wildlife management objectives which enhance the native biodiversity of the Forest Preserves as well as reduce the risk of wildlife related hazards.

Information acquired through this partnership is dispersed throughout the health services community, including the Cook County Department of Public Health, Illinois Department of Public Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to better inform them of potential risks of zoonotic ...
