Summary: Building upon restoration efforts that have been previously invested in these sites, the Forest Preserves has been awarded a grant by the USDA NRCS via the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. These grant funds provide for the purchase and installation of native seed to cover 15 acres at Turnbull Woods, as well as 12.5 acres of invasive tree and brush removal in remnant wetlands at Powderhorn Prairie that will increase native species diversity and improve wildlife habitat. Additionally, 19.9 acres of tree thinning and invasive species removal will take place at Eggers Woods, preserving the native composition of remnant woodland and marsh units and improving light levels for ground-layer herbaceous species which are being shaded out by an overabundance of canopy cover.
