RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDEN WAIVE THE PARKING FEE FOR VETERANS OF THE U.S. ARMED FORCES ON MEMORIAL DAY AND VETERANS DAY


WHEREAS, the Chicago Botanic Garden is one of the great living museums and a renowned conservation science center located in Cook County.

WHEREAS, more than one million people visit the Garden's 27 gardens and four natural areas annually, which are uniquely situated on 385 acres on and around nine islands, with six miles of lake shoreline; and

WHEREAS, the Chicago Botanic Garden has a long history of assisting veterans that dates back to the Chicago Horticultural Society and today the Garden serves veterans through its horticultural therapy programs and through the Windy City Harvest urban agriculture training program; and

WHEREAS, the Chicago Botanic Garden also offers internship programs for veterans and host events designed to provide veterans the training and services needed to reintegrate into civilian life and successfully obtain future employment; and

WHEREAS, in gratitude to our veterans for their service the Chicago Botanic Garden provides free parking to active duty U.S. military personnel and/or their families, reservists, and former POWs for their years of service; and

WHEREAS, complimentary access to parking at the Garden for all veterans of the United States Armed Forces on Memorial Day and Veterans Day will ensure more veterans are able to access the healing environment of the Garden on a more frequent basis; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Forest Preserves District Board of Commissioners requests that the Chicago Botanic Garden extend complimentary parking to all veterans of the United States Armed Forces on the following holidays as observed by the Chicago Botanic Garden: Memorial Day and Veterans Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that a suitable copy be tendered to any veteran...
