Request: Authorization to extend the grant period
Purpose: Authorization is sought for the Forest Preserves to extend the grant period of a previously approved federal grant of $100,000.00 through the Coastal Management Program (CMP) from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to support development of a Conservation and Youth Outdoor Ambassador crew at Beaubien Woods located in the City of Chicago. The grant extension was requested due to COVID-19 restrictions which prevented the Forest Preserves from safely implementing the project during the spring and summer of 2020.

Summary: Due to COVID-19 the Forest Preserves was not able to safely conduct the Beaubien Woods Conservation and Youth Outdoor Ambassador program in 2020. The program will be conducted in partnership with Friends of the Forest Preserves who will hire teens, ages 14-19, from the surrounding residential communities, to engage in a paid employment program. Hired teens will focus on leading educational and recreational activities that highlight the unique ecological assets of Beaubien Woods and the Calumet River.
