Summary: On 4/25/2023, the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the acceptance of grant funding from IDNR to support the acquisition of three (3) parcels comprising approximately 86 acres along the Deer Creek Corridor, in southeast Cook County, Illinois (Board Item No. 23-0289). The acquisition would serve as a buffer to Deer Creek, helping to improve water quality and habitat, reducing impacts from flooding, and providing much needed outdoor recreation opportunities. Due to the long time period between grant application and approval to proceed from IDNR, several market conditions have changed including changes in parcel ownership requiring the Forest Preserves to identify and engage current ownership and initiate new negotiations. A time extension of the grant agreement until 9/30/2025 is being requested to allow for completion of the acquisitions.
