Summary: On 12/14/2021, the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the acceptance of grant funding from Friends of the Chicago River via the Chi-Cal Rivers Fund conservation grant program administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (Board Item No. 21-0531). The Forest Preserves has been sub-awarded a portion of these funds to support 118.8 acres of ecological restoration at Sweet Woods in the Village of Thornton in southeast Cook County.
A no-cost extension of the grant is being requested to allow for completion of the work, which was postponed due to inadequate weather and ground conditions. The restoration work prescribed for this project requires frozen ground conditions to limit ecological damage to the surrounding landscape. Above average temperatures during the winter of 2023 only permitted about half of the planned restoration work to occur, which is why the Forest Preserves is now requesting an additional nineteen (19) month grant extension to complete the project ...
