Summary: The Forest Preserves has been awarded an LWCF grant that will support the acquisition of three (3) parcels comprising approximately 86-acres along the Deer Creek Corridor, in southeast Cook County, Illinois. The acquisition would serve as a buffer to Deer Creek, help to improve water quality and habitat, provide flood control benefits, and provide much needed outdoor recreation opportunities in an area that lacks sufficient access to public outdoor space and nature. The proposed acquisitions advance the Forest Preserves’ 2019 Southeast Cook County Land Acquisition Plan, 2012 Land Acquisition Plan, as well as its 2014 Next Century Conservation Plan.
Once the parcels have been acquired, the Forest Preserves will begin restoration and development of the sites to ensure public access, including adding parking spaces.
