Summary: The Forest Preserves seeks to enter into an Intergovernmental Agreement with MCEVBD to contribute mapping and other data related to land management activities conducted on its properties (e.g. prescribed burning, invasive vegetation removal, deer management, etc.) from 2020 to present. This data will be utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of routine land management practices within the Forest Preserves as a strategy for reducing tick-borne disease risk within Cook County.
Sites will be surveyed to determine relative abundance of vector insect species, subject to the approval of the Forest Preserves, and correlated against historical land management activities to help answer questions about disease transmission and cooperative land management for the improvement of public health.
The Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease was established in 2017 with the cooperation of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, along with research partners from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, and Illinois to build region-wide solutions to the problem of vector-borne disease in the Midwest.
