Summary: The Forest Preserves proposes to apply for a Land and Water Conservation Fund (“LWCF”) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (“IDNR”) to acquire two (2) parcels, totaling 194 acres, located in Glenwood, Illinois. This part of Cook County has less protected public conservation land than other areas and seasonal flooding is a major concern for municipalities. These acquisitions would protect the Deer Creek floodplain, provide residents with open space and begin to advance the recently completed Southeast Cook County Land Acquisition Plan. The IDNR grant application process requires confirmation by the controlling body of the Forest Preserves of its commitment to completion of the project. If awarded the grant, the Forest Preserves would enter into a grant agreement with IDNR, subject to legal review and approval. The Forest Preserves is also seeking funding for the same project from an alternate IDNR OSLAD grant program which is the subject of a related board item (19-0373).
