Summary: The Village of Lyons is seeking permission to construct and maintain a new memorial in honor of peace officers who have served in Cook County. The memorial would be funded in cooperation with the Peace Officer Memorial Foundation of Cook County (the “Foundation”). The memorial would occupy approximately 12,000 sq. feet (0.28 acres) in the northwest corner of Cermak Woods near the Cermak Family Aquatic Center. The proposed memorial design was commissioned by the Foundation and includes a wall with names of fallen officers, a series of flag poles, an entrance sign, hardscape, two (2) ADA parking spaces, and native landscaping.
The Village of Lyons agrees to be solely responsible for the construction and maintenance of the memorial. Once installed, the memorial will be open to the general public subject to the rules and guidelines of the Forest Preserves. Further, once installed, the memorial (but not the land it sits on) will be owned by the Village of Lyons as the Forest Preserves waives, for this project, the requirements under its Code Section 2-3-1(B) that structures erected on Forest Preserves property are deemed owned by the Forest Preserves. There will be no cost to the Forest Preserves for this project. Final agreement is subject to legal review and approval.
