Summary: Building upon restoration efforts that have been previously invested in these sites, the Forest Preserves has been awarded funds from the USDA NRCS in support of habitat restoration at Eggers Woods, the Powderhorn complex, and Turnbull Woods. The Forest Preserves was previously awarded $70,700.00 (Agenda Item 18-0201). USDA NRCS is awarding the Forest Preserves an additional $40,859.00.
These grant funds will provide for marsh and shrub plantings at Turnbull Woods and Eggers Woods, as well as invasive species control at Powderhorn. These projects will bolster previous restoration efforts at these sites to ensure their long-term ecological integrity and expand high-quality habitat. Powderhorn preserve, located in the City of Chicago and the Village of Burnham, contains sand prairie, sedge meadow, and emergent wetlands that provide valuable habitat for marsh birds. Eggers Woods, also within the City of Chicago, consists of savanna and a large marsh. Turnbull Woods, located in the Village of Glencoe, contains oak woodlands and wooded wetlands.
The grant award requires the execution of a recipient agreement with USDA NRCS. Final agreement is subject to legal review and approval.
Total project costs are $81,718.00, with a 50/50 match contribution by each partner.
