Summary: The Department of Law Enforcement is proposing the purchase of 100 APX6000 Portable Radios based upon the Cook County Sheriff’s Office contract with Motorola, Contract No. 1912-18028 for various Motorola radios, parts, and equipment expiring June 30, 2025. The Forest Preserves requests to use this contract and enter into a piggyback agreement with Motorola so that the Forest Preserves receives the same products and prices as set forth in the existing agreement.
The use of innovative communication technology enables police officers and other law enforcement officials to make quick and informed decisions based upon readily available evidence. The police radio is the main source of communication with dispatchers and other officers.
The current radios in use by the Department of Law Enforcement have come to their expected end of life, and without ways to repair and/or replace the current radios, the purchase of these new APX6000 radios is critical.
The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security awarded the Forest Preserves a grant for $352,022.40 to purchase sixty-eight (68) new APX6000 radios. Acceptance of this grant was approved by the Board on June 11, 2024 (Board Item No. 24-0259). The Department of Law Enforcement will purchase an additional thirty-two (32) new APX6000 radios at a cost of $165,657.60 from its existing equipment budget.
