Summary: On 2/27/2024, the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the acceptance of grant funding from Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) in the amount of $100,000.00 to support infrastructure improvements to the existing Gold Star Memorial in Dan Ryan Woods, a 257-acre forest preserve, and one of only a handful of preserves located within the City of Chicago (Board Item No. 24-0122). The proposed improvements will include a new accessible gathering space around the memorial, with seating and permeable pavers, native grasses and plants and lighting and security upgrades. Work is expected to be substantially complete in the original grant period but a no-cost time extension of the grant agreement for twelve (12) months to November 30, 2026, is needed for seeding, corrective work, punchlist work and project closeout.
