Summary: On 12/14/2021, the Forest Preserves of Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the acceptance of grant funding from The Nature Conservancy via the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Sustain Our Great Lakes Program. The Forest Preserves was sub-awarded a portion of these funds to complete 35 acres of invasive species control and 230 acres of follow-up treatments at Thornton-Lansing Road Nature Preserve, along with 16 acres of follow-up treatments at Powderhorn Prairie and Marsh Nature Preserve (Board Item No. 21-0533).
A no-cost extension of the grant is being requested to allow for remaining restoration tasks to be completed under suitable conditions to minimize impacts to the surrounding landscape. Total project costs are $343,660.86, of which the Forest Preserves will continue to contribute up to $190,000.00 or approximately 55% in direct match.
